Two children from Birmingham have been selected to perform a solo during a screening of the animated holiday film The Snowman at the city’s Town Hall. Mustafa, aged 12, and Ava, aged 11, will contribute to the live musical accompaniment for the professional production, singing the theme song Walking in the Air, alongside an orchestra. This opportunity has been characterized as unique for the children, both of whom submitted applications for the parts after encountering audition advertisements online. Ava stated: “I started jumping up and screaming and crying at the same time. I love singing so much because it makes me express my emotions, and it helps me feel a bit better when I feel down.” The auditions for both children took place in Solihull during October. Expressing his shared excitement, Ava’s father, Amit, commented: “We’re very proud of Ava’s achievements and what she’s done with her singing. “I don’t think there will be a dry eye, I think I will be very tearful, but very proud.” Both children demonstrate significant enthusiasm for singing and have been practicing since learning of their selection for the performance. Mustafa recounted his success: “My mum said ‘just read this’ and then I looked and they said ‘congratulations you’ve won the audition’.”I was so surprised, that I shouted. I didn’t think it would be true. I thought I would never win it. It’s really exciting.” The 1984 movie depicts a young boy who creates a snowman that becomes animated and transports him on a journey to the North Pole. Two screenings are scheduled for Sunday December 15, with each child performing in one. Mustafa’s mother, Ashye, remarked: “I am feeling super excited, but also super nervous. “Really proud of him, I don’t sing myself so I am quite proud that I have a son who sings and enjoys singing.” Carrot Productions is producing the show, which is currently on a UK tour, featuring various talented local children in each performance. The initiative seeks to provide opportunities for children in their respective home towns, extending beyond London. Follow BBC Birmingham on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X and Instagram.Copyright 2024 BBC.
