Victoria Beckham received an accolade at the Harper’s Bazaar magazine’s Women of the Year awards, presented by her 13-year-old daughter, Harper. Harper, who is the youngest offspring of the former Spice Girl and current fashion designer and her spouse David, conveyed to those in attendance that she felt “so nervous” yet simultaneously “excited to be here presenting the entrepreneur award, especially as tonight is a school night and hopefully this isn’t going to get me into trouble”. She further stated that her “amazing mummy” was an individual she had consistently admired, who demonstrated to her the “value of working hard, dreaming big and what it takes to succeed”. She added, “But above all else she’s taught me to always be kind and even though she has a million things to do, she rarely misses school.” Upon accepting the recognition for her “innovation and dedication to the British and global fashion industry”, the 50-year-old Beckham expressed that she was “so proud” of her daughter for “getting up on stage in front of a room full of people”. Beckham established her fashion label in 2008 and has subsequently enhanced its success through diversification into beauty items and high-end accessories. The enterprise has experienced double-digit revenue expansion over the last three years and reported achieving profitability in 2022. Nevertheless, investors, among them the Beckhams, were required to contribute a £6.9 million capital infusion in 2023, a period when operational deficits reached £200,000. During a discussion with Harper’s Bazaar, she commented: “The company has been through so much over the last 17 years – ups, downs, restructuring… it’s been quite the journey.” She continued, “So, finally, to be able to say we’re profitable is something I’m so proud of, because it’s not an easy industry, and it’s getting harder and harder.” The yearly event hosted by the fashion publication honors women’s accomplishments across the fields of film, music, and art. Among other individuals acknowledged at the gathering held at Claridge’s hotel on Tuesday was Dame Harriet Walter, known for her roles in Killing Eve and Silo, who received the icon award for her contributions to theatre, film, and television. The 74-year-old stated her aspiration to “represent all the other older women who are still good at their job”. The writer prize was awarded to author Dame Jilly Cooper for “her extraordinary half-century contribution to literature”. Nicola Coughlan, known for Bridgerton and Derry Girls, was honored with the television actress prize, concurrently, Sophie Turner, previously an actress in Game of Thrones, secured the performance award. Additional Women of the Year accolades were bestowed upon vocalist Raye, whose album garnered six awards in a single evening at the Brit awards, as well as actress Ambika Mod from One Day, artist Rana Begum, designer Francesca Amfitheatrof, and Olympian Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Presenters for the evening included actors Jodie Comer, Golda Rosheuvel, and Paapa Essiedu, along with Love Island presenter Maya Jama. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
