The States of Alderney has announced that fruit and vegetable cultivators on the island will soon have the opportunity to apply for government subsidies and grants. Alderney’s General Services Committee (GSC) is scheduled to launch this initiative as a one-year pilot program beginning in 2025, allocating £20,000 for its implementation. These grants are intended to facilitate the return of land to agricultural production, concurrently, a distinct subsidy will be provided to encourage the cultivation of local produce. According to the GSC, the program is informed by “experiences in neighbouring jurisdictions” and aims to “stimulate” the agricultural sector while mitigating the risks of business failures. The committee further stated that the initiative will offer assistance to “existing growers who are already selling produce” and individuals seeking to “reinvigorate unused land”. Initially, the GSC specified that this support would be accessible exclusively for plots exceeding half an acre (2,000 sq m) in size. The GSC indicated that the pilot scheme’s effectiveness will be assessed after its first year to ensure it “represents value for money” and achieves its stated objectives. Information regarding the application process is expected to be made public in the new year, it was confirmed. Readers can follow BBC Guernsey on X and Facebook.
