Clinical trials for a vaccine targeting the norovirus stomach bug will involve two general practitioner (GP) practices in West Oxfordshire. Researchers at Windrush Medical Practice in Witney and Eynsham Medical Group are currently seeking participants to investigate whether the vaccine can offer protection to adults from this seasonal infection, which manifests with symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea. This study is projected to continue for up to 25 months before the vaccine might become accessible for public use. Known as the Nova 301 Trial, it aims to enroll approximately 25,000 individuals worldwide to assess the efficacy of the mRNA vaccine. Developed by Moderna, this vaccine functions similarly to the company’s Covid jab, providing the immune system with instructions on how to identify an invading virus and generate antibodies to defend against it. The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), which serves as the research division of the NHS, is providing support for the trial. The NIHR has characterized norovirus as “one of the most common causes of stomach bugs in the UK.” Furthermore, the institute noted that conducting a vaccine trial within a GP practice setting is “quite unusual.” Dr. Nick Thomas, who is spearheading the study at Windrush Medical Practice, described it as “a fantastic opportunity for us in West Oxfordshire and Oxfordshire as a whole.” He stated, “We are so proud and pleased to be taking part in and supporting this,” and mentioned that participation is available to individuals throughout the entire region. Individuals taking part will receive either the active vaccine or a placebo injection and must commit to attending as many as seven scheduled clinic appointments throughout the trial period. Eligibility criteria stipulate that participants must be “18 years of age or over, be in good health and should not currently have a chronic gastrointestinal disease,” which encompasses any medical condition involving regular vomiting or diarrhoea. The NIHR also stated that researchers would “make sure that participants understand the important details about the trial before agreeing to take part.” Post navigation Mother Details 18-Month Struggle for Five-Year-Old’s Speech Therapy Access Fundraiser Honoring Daughter’s Memory Reaches Nearly £175,000
