Local police in South Africa have stated that a professional football player is set to face charges of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving. These charges stem from allegations that he departed the site of a deadly vehicle collision which resulted in the death of a young girl. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning in Gauteng province, when Shaun Mogaila, 29, a player for Sekhukhune United, reportedly drove his BMW into another vehicle occupied by an adult woman and two children. A police spokesperson informed the local news site IOL that the nine-year-old child was “declared dead on scene.” Mr. Mogaila subsequently presented himself at Rabie Ridge Police Station several hours following the accident. Although the player was anticipated to make an appearance at a magistrate’s court, a spokesperson for the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) informed news site SowetanLive that a postponement had occurred. The adult woman and the 13-year-old child involved in the collision are presently receiving medical care in hospital. Sekhukhune United has, as of yet, refrained from issuing a statement regarding the event. A dashcam recording of the collision has circulated widely on social media platforms, prompting significant public outrage. One X user commented, “This is what scares me to drive nowadays, the fact that I can get in the car and drive safely with my family and still pass away.” Conversely, some individuals have voiced support for the footballer, praising his decision to surrender to authorities. Another X user stated, “You who are busy condemning Shaune Mogaila let’s hope you don’t own cars, you have no idea what happens as soon as you cause an accident, even nobody gets hurts, the poor guy handed himself in later after he came back to his senses.” Prior to the accident, the player had participated in a match against the Richards Bay team at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo, just hours earlier.
