A Member of Parliament declared his intention to oppose the cancellation of a significant road project in Norfolk. Chancellor Rachel Reeves stated in her Budget that the £50 million upgrade for the Vauxhall roundabout in Great Yarmouth lacked “clear value for money.” This project was intended to alleviate traffic congestion on the A47, which serves as the primary connection between Yarmouth and Norwich, with an anticipated start in the near future. Rupert Lowe, the Reform UK MP representing Great Yarmouth, informed the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “The new Vauxhall roundabout scheme has been axed by this atrocious Labour government – clearly this has repercussions for dualling the Acle Straight.” He further stated: “More sensible public investment has been sacrificed, punishing the hard-working people of Great Yarmouth. It is unacceptable.” The comprehensive Budget document, released by the Treasury on Wednesday, indicated that the government would “take difficult decisions where there is not a clear value for money case to invest.” This decision led to the cancellation of four road projects, among them the Vauxhall roundabout work, citing them as “unfunded and unaffordable.” The proposed upgrade aimed to enhance capacity and mitigate congestion at the primary western entry point into Yarmouth. The project was initially suggested in 2017; however, its commencement was postponed following the approval of a third river crossing. Nevertheless, Great Yarmouth Borough Council indicated that these improvements could have been finalized “two to three years” after the new bridge, which opened in February, was established. The roundabout’s design would have been compatible with a dual-carriageway Acle Straight, a nine-mile (14km) section of the A47 presently operating as a single-carriageway. The decision elicited varied responses within the town. Stephen Lucas, 72, of Gorleston, commented that it “made sense.” He elaborated: “The money perhaps could be spent better than remodelling a roundabout.” He added: “I don’t think it’s a big issue, unless it’s summertime when there’s more traffic on the roads.” Rachel Hillier, 50, from Great Yarmouth, stated that local roads “could definitely be improved.” She remarked: “There’s so much that needs help in this town. I think it needs to be done, but there’s other things that are more important.” Conversely, Karen Burnett, 66, contended that the decision was incorrect and described the roundabout as “an absolute nightmare” on occasion. She further asserted: “That needs doing very badly.”
