Tom McKibbin has secured a PGA Tour card for the upcoming season, having concluded the Race to Dubai standings in 18th place. He expressed confidence that the golf courses in America will be well-suited to his playing style. The 21-year-old Northern Irish golfer concluded the DP World Tour Championship tied for 11th position. His performance included a crucial birdie on the final hole, which enabled him to claim the tenth and final PGA Tour card available, thereby surpassing England’s Jordan Smith. “It would be pretty amazing to get over there and play some golf,” McKibbin stated. He added, “I seem to like to play on the harder courses and I think that suits my game a little more.” “It’ll be exciting to get over there and see how it goes,” he remarked. Entering the season’s final event at Jumeirah Golf Estates, McKibbin was required to overtake one competitor also vying for a PGA Tour spot. He had established a strong standing after recording a round of 67 on Saturday. Nevertheless, bogeys on the 15th and 16th holes on Sunday meant he needed to regain a stroke. He maintained composure and successfully achieved the necessary birdie on the 18th hole. Reflecting on the experience, he commented, “I think it was a tough one, wanting to finish the tournament as best I can, knowing that was on the line, a hard golf course and pretty tricky day.” He further elaborated, “Especially 17, 18, I feel like you don’t have to hit too poor of a shot to find the water, but luckily I hit pretty good ones.” McKibbin’s achievement at the DP World Tour’s 2024 finale marked a successful day for Northern Irish golfers in Dubai, as Rory McIlroy simultaneously won the tournament and secured his sixth Race To Dubai title. The world number three golfer, Rory McIlroy, had been monitoring the performance of his fellow golfer from County Down and acknowledged experiencing nervousness himself. McIlroy stated, “I was looking at the leaderboard today and saw Tom was in the top 10 and thought ‘okay, good’. When I was walking off the last I didn’t see his name.” He continued, “I saw him before I signed my card and he was congratulating me. I didn’t want to ask but I was like ‘yay or nay?’ and he said ‘yes’.” “So, [I’m] very happy for him,” McIlroy concluded. McIlroy concurred that McKibbin’s playing style is well-suited for the PGA Tour courses. The 35-year-old added, “I think his game is going to be very suited to America, he hits it high and long.” “He’s been very, very consistent. For a guy that’s only 21 to show that level of consistency, that bodes well for the future,” he observed. “Very, very happy for him and excited he achieved one of his big goals this year,” McIlroy expressed.
