An individual has been brought before a court, facing charges related to the fatalities of two people resulting from a house explosion in Newcastle. The incident, which occurred on 16 October in Violet Close, Benwell, claimed the lives of seven-year-old Archie York and 35-year-old Jason Laws. Reece Galbraith, aged 33, residing at Rectory Road, Gateshead, presented himself at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court. He stands accused of two counts of manslaughter, along with charges of producing cannabis and involvement in the supply of cannabis. No formal pleas were submitted during this appearance. His subsequent court date is scheduled for 7 January at Newcastle Crown Court. Although Mr. Galbraith was initially granted bail, the prosecution contested this ruling. Consequently, the former construction worker was ordered to remain in custody, with an additional hearing slated to take place within 48 hours. Three other men, who were previously apprehended as part of the ongoing inquiry, consisting of two individuals in their thirties and one in his fifties, continue to be on police bail. Detective Chief Inspector Katie Smith of Northumbria Police characterized the explosion as a “truly tragic incident.” She further stated, “We recognise the strength of feeling around what has happened and would continue to ask people to avoid speculation both online and in the community which could jeopardise the ongoing proceedings.” The police force has issued a request for anyone possessing information pertinent to the case to present it. Archie York lost his life in the explosion, which devastated the structure around 00:45 BST. His aunt, Abbie, remembered him as a “loving boy, with a cheeky little grin on his face all of the time.” Following the blast, his parents and two-month-old brother received hospital treatment but have since been released. Jason “Jay” Laws was subsequently identified as the second fatality of the explosion. His brother, professional boxer Joseph Laws, referred to him as “the best dad in the world.” Copyright 2024 BBC.
