An individual aged 63 has been apprehended subsequent to the theft of hundreds of truckles of cheddar, valued at over £300,000, from Neal’s Yard Dairy, a London-based cheese specialist. On October 21, law enforcement received a report concerning the larceny from the Southwark-located manufacturer. The man was transported to a police station in south London for questioning. He has since been released on bail, as further inquiries remain ongoing. Impersonating legitimate wholesalers, fraudsters acquired 950 clothbound cheeses from the Southwark-based company before their true nature as a fictitious firm was discovered. Over 22 tonnes of three distinct artisan cheddars—Hafod Welsh, Westcombe, and Pitchfork—all of which are award-winning and possess a high monetary value, were taken. Neal’s Yard Dairy offers Hafod Welsh at £12.90 for a 300g piece, while Westcombe is priced at £7.15 for 250g, and Pitchfork costs £11 for 250g. Neal’s Yard confirmed it had already compensated the cheese producers, thereby ensuring the individual dairies would not bear the associated expenses. The company is presently working to address the financial setback, a spokesperson indicated.
