A public consultation has commenced to gather opinions regarding the implementation of regulations concerning dog walking. South Kesteven District Council (SKDC) is currently assessing the necessity of a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) that would restrict the quantity of dogs a single individual can walk simultaneously while on leads. This consultation extends an invitation to local residents, animal welfare groups, and commercial entities to submit their perspectives. The RSPCA recommends a maximum of four dogs being walked by one person concurrently. Should the initial responses indicate support for the proposition, the PSPO, which could remain in effect for a period of up to three years, would then undergo further consideration following an additional round of consultation. Councillor Phil Gadd, the representative for Grantham’s Belmont Ward, stated that he received approaches from two individuals who voiced worries about people exercising multiple dogs off-lead within the locality. He commented: “It needs to be tested to see if there is some support for it and I think that’s the reasonable thing to do.” He added: “If they don’t support it then it doesn’t go through.” He concluded: “I don’t want to be too prescriptive, we want to get people to engage.” Councillor Rhea Rayside, who holds the position of cabinet member for people and communities, remarked: “We want people to have their say at this preliminary stage of the consultation process.” She further stated: “It gives residents the chance to air concerns, including any impact the introduction of a PSPO limiting the number of dogs on leads being walked by one person may have on you or your business.” The deadline for this consultation is 24 December.
