A prohibition on demonstrations near an abortion clinic in a specific town has been enacted. The British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS), located on London Street in Reading, is where abortions are performed. Groups advocating for pro-life views have consistently conducted vigils outside the facility on Saturdays. These gatherings are part of the “40 Days for Life” campaigns, which have been observed globally since September. As a result, pro-life vigils or demonstrations must now be conducted at a minimum distance of 150 metres (492 ft) from the centre. The concept of exclusion zones was initially deliberated in parliament during 2022. This followed the unanimous approval by Reading Borough councillors of a proposal to pursue a public space protection order, aiming to establish a buffer area around the BPAS clinic. BPAS has expressed approval regarding the implementation of this measure. Heidi Stewart, the CEO of the organization, stated: “For too long women have been harassed, intimidated, and abused going in to seek essential healthcare. They’ve been called murderers.“They’ve had pamphlets shoved at them falsely claiming abortion causes breast cancer and our staff are being threatened, abused and followed to their cars simply for doing their jobs.“Today, all of that will come to an end.” She urged individuals to maintain vigilance concerning demonstrations outside the clinic, adding: “There is no room for intimidation in abortion care.” A spokesperson for the “40 Days for Life” campaign in Reading conveyed dissatisfaction with the establishment of the buffer zone. The representative affirmed that their presence at the centres is “to pray peacefully without harassment or intimidation to anyone”. They further commented: “There are many women up and down the country who have changed their minds only because they had the opportunity to speak to someone who was praying at a vigil outside a clinic.“I would also like to point out that even silent prayer being banned is a dangerous attack on civil liberties.” Describing it as a “dangerous precedent,” they stated: “We will continue our pro-life vigils in compliance with the law and continue to pray for an end to abortion and all those affected by it.”
