England international and Manchester United midfielder Ella Toone will miss her club’s upcoming two matches after sustaining a calf injury during a training session. Toone was absent from the squad for United’s Women’s Super League (WSL) fixture against Leicester on Sunday, marking the first occasion in 96 league games that she has not been in the starting lineup for the Red Devils. Manchester United manager Marc Skinner verified that Toone will be unavailable for their mid-week League Cup fixture away at Everton, as well as the subsequent WSL match against league leaders Chelsea next Sunday. The 25-year-old Toone incurred the injury during Manchester United’s training session on Friday. Consequently, her participation in the England squad for their friendly matches during the forthcoming international break is now uncertain. Skinner stated, “Yesterday in training Ella took a calf injury.” He added, “She was running and just felt something. She will miss the next two games, she will miss Everton and Chelsea, then we will speak later in the week to know the scale of it.” Regarding her availability for England, Skinner commented, “Potentially [she will be available for England] – we don’t know that yet.” England is scheduled to host the USA in a friendly match at Wembley on November 30, followed by a game against Switzerland three days subsequent. This development exacerbates the injury concerns for England manager Sarina Wiegman, who is already confirmed to be without Lauren James for these upcoming fixtures, and also faces uncertainty regarding Lauren Hemp, who has been absent from Manchester City’s previous two matches due to injury. Manchester United, currently positioned fifth in the league standings, anticipates Toone’s recovery in time for their home fixture against Liverpool on December 8, after the international break concludes. Toone’s performance this season has seen her struggle with form, as she has not scored in any of the six WSL games she has played for United.
