The ability for more rail passengers to travel between Hull and Liverpool has been facilitated by the deployment of larger, more environmentally conscious trains. A revised TransPennine Express timetable became active on Sunday, with Nova 1 trains scheduled to commence cross-Pennine routes this week. This fleet comprises 19 trains, each with five carriages, offering an additional 161 seats compared to the trains previously operating on this line. These bi-mode trains can run on either diesel or electric power. Councillor Mike Ross, who leads Hull City Council, stated that the newly introduced hourly service is expected to “help transform rail travel, with shorter journey times and more travel opportunities across the north”. He further commented that “Many of these services will be operated by modern bi-mode trains using a mix of diesel and electric power as they go from Hull to Liverpool, resulting in less carbon emissions and helping to combat climate change.” Prior to this change, Nova 1 trains exclusively operated on routes connecting Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Scarborough, and Edinburgh. Chris Jackson, the managing director of TransPennine Express, expressed that he was “pleased to be able to introduce our new services for our customers in Hull”. He also advised passengers to consult the updated timetables prior to their journeys.
