A man has received a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence after fracturing his partner’s cheekbone during an assault that spanned 25 minutes. Jack Mallaby, residing in Douglas, delivered numerous punches to the woman in what was described as a “protracted attack,” which also resulted in her sustaining a “ripped ear.” During proceedings at Douglas Courthouse, Mallaby contended that the assault, which occurred in May 2023, was an act of self-defence; however, he was convicted of domestic abuse following a trial. The 21-year-old individual was also issued a five-year restraining order, prohibiting him from making contact with his victim. Testimony presented to the court indicated that Mallaby’s assault on the victim, who was 17 years old at the time, occurred inside a caravan on 14 May 2023, subsequent to an argument between the two. According to court accounts, during the assault, he straddled the victim, struck her head against the interior of the caravan, and repeatedly punched her. A victim impact statement, read aloud in court, conveyed that the incident had caused a “damaging psychological impact” on her, making her “afraid to go out in public in case she encountered Mallaby.” Deemster Sandeep Kainth characterized the event as a “very unpleasant assault” that led to “significant long-term injuries” for the victim. He further stated that by entering a not guilty plea and allowing the case to proceed to trial, Mallaby remained “in denial.”
