Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin stated that Newcastle’s success in scoring three goals against Liverpool provides “encouragement for every other team” in the Premier League. While Arne Slot’s team has maintained the best defensive record in the league this season by goals conceded, they appeared more exposed during the match at St James’ Park. Speaking on the BBC Radio 5 Live Football Daily podcast, Nevin commented, “Liverpool’s defence in the first half didn’t actually look that good.” He elaborated, “It was unbalanced and it didn’t look as well structured.” Nevin pointed out that in the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, and with Conor Bradley also unavailable, opposing teams might perceive a “weakness” on that flank. Newcastle was observed to frequently utilize long passes, having apparently identified a lack of pace within Liverpool’s back line. Nevin noted that this particular vulnerability had not been previously detected, suggesting that other teams might now consider tactics involving playing “over the top and getting in behind.” However, Nevin concluded that this defensive issue “soon stopped as soon as Alexander-Arnold came on!”
