A covered market has been closed indefinitely following a fire, an incident described as “devastating” by the local council. Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue service was dispatched to Milton Keynes Market, located adjacent to Centre:MK, at approximately 19:27 GMT on Tuesday. Eleven appliances and their crews were involved in tackling the blaze, while Thames Valley Police advised the public to avoid the vicinity and to keep windows and doors shut. The Milton Keynes Market team issued a statement on social media, expressing that they were “deeply saddened” by the news. The covered market, which comprises both fixed stalls and casual pitches, is jointly owned by the Milton Keynes Development Partnership and Milton Keynes City Council. The market also noted that emergency services worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control. A spokesperson for the market stated: “This is a devastating blow to our market traders, especially during the busy Christmas period.” The spokesperson further added: “We ask for your understanding and consideration during this difficult time, as businesses have been affected.” This incident follows a previous fire at the market 14 years ago, which resulted in the closure of the bridge at Secklow Gate for 18 months. A police spokesperson confirmed that the force is collaborating with the fire service to determine the cause of the current blaze. They also indicated that Secklow Gate and the market remain closed.
