The parents of Penelope Greathead, a 14-month-old girl from Ravenscar, North Yorkshire, who is critically ill, have expressed “hope” after a crucial bed was secured for her at a specialist hospital. Penelope suffers from a heart condition known as dilated cardiomyopathy and had been on life support at Leeds Children’s Hospital. Her parents, Jordan Greathead and Hollie Suff, had previously been informed of a scarcity of NHS beds suitable for their daughter’s required treatment. Penelope’s family had successfully raised £120,000 for potential treatment in Germany. However, the couple announced on Monday that a place had been secured at Great Ormond Street Hospital. With Penelope now able to receive care at the London children’s hospital, the family intends to donate the raised funds to other families facing similar circumstances. The fundraising goal was met within three days, prompting the couple to extend their thanks “from the bottom of our hearts” to contributors. Through social media, they conveyed that they were “thanking their lucky stars” following the hospital’s confirmation of a space for their daughter. They stated, “This is only the very beginning of her journey but we now have a plan and hope.” Mrs. Suff informed BBC Look North last week that Penelope’s condition, which impairs the heart’s ability to circulate blood throughout the body, was diagnosed when she was merely a few weeks old. While initially managed with medication, her health worsened during a routine hospital stay in Leeds approximately two weeks ago, leading to a cardiac arrest. Since then, Penelope has relied on a life support device that temporarily performs the functions of the heart and lungs. Mrs. Suff specified that Penelope requires a Berlin Heart device to assist in pumping blood around her body. Following the successful online appeal, the family indicated their intention to provide further updates on Penelope’s treatment in the coming days. Expressing gratitude to all who contributed, they conveyed: “There are no words that can be used to say how thankful we are to each and every single person who has donated, shared Penelope’s story or sent us messages of support.” They concluded with, “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.” The family also extended appreciation to the staff at Leeds Children’s Hospital, acknowledging that they “provided the most amazing care to our little girl” over recent weeks.
