Nicolas Jackson has scored seven goals in 12 Premier League matches this season. Notably, only six months prior, reports suggested Chelsea considered a cash-plus-player exchange involving Jackson for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. That transaction did not occur, and while Isak continues to perform effectively for Newcastle, Chelsea now features its own standout player in 23-year-old Jackson, whose contributions were central to their 2-1 win against Leicester City. The forward from Senegal initiated the scoring in the 15th minute and assisted Enzo Fernandez’s goal in the second half. Despite Jackson’s record of 17 goals in 44 appearances last season—surpassing the legendary Didier Drogba’s tally in his debut season at the club—discussions persisted regarding Chelsea’s need to acquire a striker capable of competing at the elite level. ESPN pundit Craig Burley commented on Jackson last season, stating, “Somebody will have to tell me what Nicolas Jackson does,” and adding, “He’s clearly not good enough to play as a headline striker in the Premier League.” During his initial season, Jackson was noted for squandering numerous opportunities and accumulating a poor disciplinary record; however, he is now demonstrating his value, altering previous perceptions. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, a former Blues striker, speaking on the BBC’s Planet Football podcast, ranked Jackson among the league’s top four strikers, alongside Erling Haaland, Ollie Watkins, and Isak. Additionally, Joe Cole remarked on TNT Sport’s coverage of the early kick-off that Jackson is “at the height of his game.” Jackson is developing into a forward who can secure victories even when key player Cole Palmer performs below par, as was observed at Leicester following an early robust tackle from Wilfred Ndidi. His goal against Leicester evoked comparisons to Drogba, as he overcame defender Wout Faes with strength before executing a precise touch and finish to open the scoring. Jackson’s persistent effort contributed to Chelsea regaining possession high on the field through his pressing, leading to an opportunity missed by Noni Madueke and another converted by Fernandez. However, Jackson’s most significant improvement has been his consistency in recent months. Since May, only Haaland (18) has scored more league goals than Jackson (11). Jackson has contributed to 18 goals (12 goals, six assists) across his last 20 league appearances. Since his arrival in England, only Haaland and Watkins have registered more non-penalty goals than Jackson. Following the victory, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca expressed considerable admiration for Jackson. The Italian manager stated, “He is working hard on the ball and off the ball. He is making an effort to understand the way we want to play.” Maresca further explained, “Sometimes we use him almost as a midfielder, dropping. Sometimes we use him attacking in behind. If you remember Brighton [a 4-2 home win at the end of September], or even today. It depends on the gameplan.” He concluded, “We are very happy with the way Nico is playing on the ball but especially in the way he is playing off the ball – the way he is pressing. We are sure he is going to get better game after game.” Jackson informed BBC Sport that his current form was “just beginning,” adding, “We’ll talk about it when the league is finished.” According to football statisticians Opta, Chelsea has a 55.9 percent probability of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League and a 75.8 percent chance of ending in the top five. This prospect introduces the possibility of Champions League qualification, a first under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital. The club has faced scrutiny for expenditures exceeding £1billion across five transfer windows, yet many of the acquired players are now demonstrating their worth. Leicester manager Steve Cooper remarked on Chelsea’s impressive talent depth, even with potential starters Malo Gusto and Pedro Neto withdrawing shortly before the match. Chelsea frequently fields distinct line-ups for league and cup fixtures, and the team currently holds third place with 22 points, matching Arsenal and Brighton, who are in fourth and fifth positions, respectively. After 12 games, Maresca’s squad has established a strong standing for Champions League qualification and can also consider the title race, being only six points adrift of leaders Liverpool, especially as contenders Manchester City and Arsenal have shown inconsistencies this season.
