Ugur Vata, proprietor of The Galley, a well-regarded restaurant situated in Woodbridge, Suffolk, is transferring ownership to new operators, citing health considerations as his primary motivation. The establishment is scheduled to cease operations under his ownership on November 16. The new proprietors will be the current owners of the Blue Fig restaurant, located in Bury St Edmunds. Mr. Vata expressed that although he would miss his clientele, his desire was for the restaurant to be advanced by new management. He stated, “I’m not an old man but because of my age [I wanted] to give the opportunity to younger and enthusiastic people to take this premises to the next stage.” He further elaborated, “It wasn’t easy and since the pandemic, when the whole world changed, I’m more motivated than ever, more creative than ever.” Nevertheless, he acknowledged, “However physically I can’t do it anymore, health and age is definitely a huge impact as to why I can’t continue.” Thirty years prior, Mr. Vata first established The Galley in Ipswich, subsequently opening a second location in Woodbridge. The Ipswich outlet has since ceased operations, and following the pandemic, Mr. Vata had limited the Woodbridge restaurant’s operating hours to just two days per week. He indicated that this reduced schedule had contributed to challenges in securing consistent personnel. Despite this, he reflected favorably on his tenure. He remarked, “Currently so many closings are happening.” He added, “Any good operators if they provide and sacrifice, they will go at it for 30 years.” Concluding, he stated, “If you want to work, and you motivate people to work for you, I think you win.” As per Mr. Vata, the Blue Fig restaurant intends to retain The Galley name for its initial month of operation. He further commented, “They’ve got a very good operation.” He anticipated, “They’re going to bring their own touch, they’re going to bring something new to Woodbridge and the surrounding areas.” Reflecting on his departure, he shared, “I think I will miss quite a lot of the characters that come into my restaurant over the years.” He also noted, “I’ve had lots of well wishes from all around the world – Hong Kong, Australia, America, you name it.” He clarified his decision, stating, “I’m not giving up… I’m just hanging up my apron on the restaurant side of it.” Mr. Vata will maintain his involvement in The Galley ice cream shop, which is situated a short distance from the restaurant.
