The war memorial and its adjacent gardens in Goole have been temporarily shut down, the town council has confirmed, after syringes were discovered on the premises. On Tuesday, the authority informed residents that securing the gates was their only recourse due to “anti-social behaviour.” Town council clerk Brian Robertson stated that multiple discarded needles were found, which he described as posing “a public safety risk.” Robertson added that the drugs paraphernalia had been disposed of and that East Riding of Yorkshire Council had been notified. A number of individuals expressed sadness and disappointment on the council’s Facebook page. One person commented: “Total lack of respect, these people gave their lives so we can have the life we have.” Typically, volunteers are responsible for opening and closing the gates each day. The town council announced that the gates will remain closed until the new year.
