MotoGP champion Jorge Martin secured his inaugural MotoGP championship by finishing third in the final race of the season in Barcelona. This event was won by Francesco Bagnaia, who was Martin’s closest competitor. Martin is set to move from Pramac to Aprilia for the upcoming season. Despite his win at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Italy’s Bagnaia, who began the day 19 points adrift of Martin, could not overcome the Spanish rider’s lead. Pramac rider Martin, who clinched the championship by a margin of 10 points, expressed his surprise, stating, “I am completely shocked.” He added, “This is for my family, for the people who are supporting me, this is for them.” Martin further commented on the emotional nature of the event, saying, “I started crying at the end. It was a really emotional race. It’s been a long journey with a lot of crashes and big injuries but finally we are here. I hope we can keep improving and enjoy the moment.” For the 26-year-old to secure the championship, he needed to place no worse than ninth, assuming Ducati’s Bagnaia claimed victory from pole position. Bagnaia, the two-time reigning champion, had previously won the Malaysian Grand Prix earlier in the month, extending the title contest to the concluding weekend. His subsequent sprint victory on Saturday further reduced his rival’s advantage. Martin, slated to join Aprilia for the next season, had previously vied with the 27-year-old Italian for the championship in 2023, but his challenge ended prematurely with a crash during the season-closing Valencia GP. Bagnaia, who secured 11 victories out of the season’s 20 races against Martin’s three, commented, “This day is for him.” He continued, “I think he is deserving of what he achieved.” Six-time world champion Marc Marquez secured second place in Sunday’s race, while Martin dedicated his inaugural championship win to the city of Valencia. The season’s final event was originally slated for Valencia on November 15 but was relocated due to severe floods in the region. The final overall standings were as follows: 1. Jorge Martin (Spa/Pramac Racing) 508 points 2. Francesco Bagnaia (Ita/Ducati) 498 3. Marc Marquez (Spa/Gresini Racing) 392 4. Enea Bastianini (Ita/Ducati) 386 5.
