Aberdeen has significantly surpassed its expected goals rating this season. Jimmy Thelin has had to execute many strategies effectively to ensure his Aberdeen squad remains tied on points with Celtic at the top of the Premiership. One aspect the Swede is certainly benefiting from amidst an impressive league start is an attack that consistently overperforms its underlying statistics. With 24 goals scored across 11 matches, the Dons are the division’s second-highest scorers by a considerable margin at this early stage. However, where that figure becomes even more remarkable is its accumulation alongside an expected goals tally of 15.5. Effectively, this indicates that Aberdeen has scored nearly nine times more than anticipated based on the quality of chances they have generated. As the sample size grows, this suggests a highly clinical attack, especially considering that four teams have recorded more touches in the opposition box and three teams have registered more shots on target. Yet, a more pessimistic viewpoint will question the sustainability of this trend, as these numbers often tend to normalize over the course of an entire campaign. Nevertheless, maintaining their shot conversion rate of 17% – the highest in the division – should help prevent a decline. In addition, their big chance conversion rate of 54% is considerably higher than Celtic’s (30%). These minor statistical advantages over the reigning champions, who currently lead the table solely on goal difference, could prove crucial if Thelin’s team is to maintain its competitive pace.
