An 18-year-old from Nottingham has been taken into custody following the seizure of a parcel from France containing a knife at the border. Officers from Nottinghamshire Police visited the teenager’s residence on Thursday, after UK Border Force officials confiscated a package that contained a curved karambit knife. The police force indicated that the parcel was addressed to the individual, who was subsequently arrested on suspicion of importing a prohibited weapon with intent to evade a prohibition/restriction. “Remember – just because something is for sale online, it does not mean it is legal to import into or own in this country,” stated Sgt Jono Pothecary, the investigation lead. Police clarify that offensive weapons designed to kill or inflict serious injury and lacking a legitimate use are forbidden from being imported into the UK. The 18-year-old also faced arrest for possession of a Class A drug, after suspected ecstasy tablets were discovered during a search of his home address. He was questioned while in custody and later released on bail, pending further investigation work, the force added. Sgt Pothecary remarked: “As a police force we regularly work alongside UK Border Force to prevent packages containing illegal weapons from being delivered.” He continued: “We also carry out visits to the people who ordered the items to ensure they are held responsible for attempting to bring lethal weapons into our communities.” Sgt Pothecary concluded: “An online retailer will not stop you buying something which is illegal here in the UK – it’s up to you as an individual to be aware of the law.” For updates, follow BBC Nottingham on Facebook, on X, or on Instagram.
