Northampton Town’s interim manager, Ian Sampson, has expressed indecision regarding his interest in securing the position permanently. His comments followed his admission that Northampton was outperformed by Rotherham on Saturday. Sampson previously managed the Cobblers from 2009 to 2011. He rejoined the club in 2019, serving as assistant to Jon Brady, who stepped down from his role earlier this month. Last week, club chairman Kelvin Thomas confirmed that Sampson, aged 56, is among the individuals being considered by the board to permanently succeed Brady. Under Sampson’s temporary leadership, Northampton secured a victory against Nene derby rivals Peterborough United in his initial match, but subsequently suffered a 3-0 defeat away to Rotherham United on Saturday. When questioned by BBC Radio Northampton after the match about his desire for a second opportunity at the managerial role, Sampson stated: “Them emotions go from yes to no after today’s defeat. It’s something that’s in the back of my mind, but nothing concrete at the moment.” The Cobblers currently occupy 19th position in League One, holding a two-point advantage over the relegation zone. Their next fixture is a home game against Charlton Athletic scheduled for Saturday. Prior to that League One match, however, they are set to face Peterborough again on Tuesday evening, competing for a spot in the last 16 of the EFL Trophy. A win in that match would secure them a home fixture against League Two team Walsall. Sampson commented, “Any game against Peterborough is a big game for the club, we’ll see who we can get out there on Tuesday night and give it our best.” Notwithstanding the unsatisfactory display against Rotherham, Northampton received a boost with the return of defenders TJ Eyoma and Jordan Willis, a part of the squad that has experienced significant injury issues this season. Eyoma participated in the second half at the AESSEAL New York Stadium, whereas Willis remained on the bench as an unused substitute. Sampson further stated: “I was pleased with TJ when he came on, I thought he gave us a little bit more strength in that position, something we’ve been missing lately.” He continued, “We’ve got one centre-half fit, TJ who’s coming back and probably played maximum minutes there, 45, and Jordan on the bench, who again is limited to minutes.” Sampson concluded, “Signs of them coming back is good for us going forwards, because if we play three or four at the back, we need central defenders.” Post navigation Clubs Reportedly Eye Harry Maguire Amid United Uncertainty Allegations Against Referee Coote Create Difficulties for PGMOL
