A court has been informed that a human smuggling network, responsible for transporting hundreds of individuals from the Middle East across Europe, was managed by two individuals operating out of a car wash. Dilshad Shamo, aged 41, and Ali Khdir, aged 40, face charges of illegally transporting individuals from Iraq, Iran, and Syria into Europe, utilizing boats, lorries, and cars. According to testimony presented in court, this operation, which spanned from September 2022 to April 2023, was orchestrated from the Fast Track Hand Car Wash located in Caerphilly, a business owned and run by the two men. Mr. Shamo, an Iraqi national by birth, and Mr. Khdir, who originates from Iran, both of whom previously provided Caerphilly addresses, are denying five charges of conspiracy to violate migration legislation in Italy, Romania, Croatia, and Germany, with the intent of bringing people into European Union (EU) countries. Sarah Gaunt, representing the prosecution, informed Cardiff Crown Court that the jury would be presented with WhatsApp evidence, comprising voice messages exchanged between the defendants and individuals located in Iraq, Turkey, and various parts of Europe, concerning efforts to smuggle people across the continent. She stated that the majority of those trafficked originated from Iraq, Iran, and Syria, and were required to pay sums “equating to several thousands of pounds.” A significant portion of these funds was transferred utilizing the hawala system, which is a conventional method for moving money via brokers, while lesser sums were dispatched through Western Union. Ms. Gaunt indicated that the prosecution’s argument would center on a human smuggling operation originating from Caerphilly, which involved Italy, Romania, Germany, and Croatia. She affirmed, “These four countries were among the European countries that migrants were trafficked to, or through, by these defendants.” She further mentioned that law enforcement conducted surveillance on the defendants, documenting their activities, which included the installation of “listening devices in their cars and the car wash in Caerphilly.” “You will hear various conversations recorded of these defendants talking whilst they were in their motor vehicles and seem to be the only occupants,” she stated, noting that numerous conversations were conducted in Kurdish and had undergone translation for the jury’s benefit. She outlined four alleged routes employed by the defendants for trafficking individuals across Europe: The legal proceedings are ongoing.
