Travelers utilizing rail and road networks are encouraged to make advance arrangements due to the impending closure of a level crossing for an entire weekend in late November. This two-day closure, necessitated by railway track replacement work at the Portslade level crossing on Boundary Road, will lead to diversions. The closure is set to commence at 01:00 GMT on 30 November and conclude by 02:00 on 2 December. Drivers are directed to utilize the A270 Old Shoreham Road as an alternative route, while certain train services will be substituted with buses. The existing underpass will remain accessible for pedestrians. Additionally, a shuttle bus service will be available for individuals unable to use the underpass, providing transport between Portslade railway station car park, situated north of the level crossing (adjacent to the cycle hub), and Portslade station (stop C), located outside Station Kebab House. This shuttle will run continuously for the duration of the crossing’s closure. Local bus routes 1X, 6, and 46 will all experience diversions. Throughout the closure period, buses will substitute for trains operating between Brighton and Littlehampton. Southern train services typically running between London Victoria and Littlehampton will be rerouted to conclude their journeys at Brighton exclusively, though services will maintain operation between Littlehampton and Portsmouth Harbour/Southampton Central. Lucy McAuliffe, Network Rail’s Sussex Route director, issued a statement regarding the upcoming work: “To complete the work, we need to close the railway, and as the work is taking place near the level crossing, it needs to close as well. We’re asking motorists to leave a bit more time to travel as the diversion will mean slightly longer journeys. Trains will be replaced by buses when the work is being carried out. Thank you for bearing with us while we work to improve the railway.” For further updates, follow BBC Sussex on Facebook, on X, and on Instagram.
