On Tuesday, approximately 300 individuals convened in County Carlow for the funeral of Mary Regan, an 89-year-old woman who passed away without any surviving family members. Ms. Regan had resided in Carlow town for around two decades prior to her death at Hillview Nursing Home on November 29. Rory Healy, a local funeral director, had issued a Facebook appeal for attendees from her “adopted town of Carlow” to ensure she was not “sent off alone”. A large number of people assembled at Askea Church, an event Mr. Healy characterized as a “tremendously humbling” display of community solidarity. Mr. Healy noted that roughly 40 people typically attended morning Mass at Askea Church. He characterized the presence of about 300 individuals at Mary’s funeral Mass as illustrating “a great sense of humanity”. Mary’s only remaining family were distant relatives residing approximately 100 miles away in West Cork. She seldom received visitors during her time at the nursing home. Mr. Healy stated that he had anticipated a maximum of about a dozen attendees. He remarked, “The hall kept filling up, I was bowled over by the response.” Additionally, “A class from the local primary school was also in attendance, offering gifts at Mass.” Mr. Healy characterized Mary as a “quiet, reserved lady with a beautiful Cork lilt”. She had been preceded in death by her four siblings and her partner, Fred (Tony) Lang. Her remains are scheduled to be transported to her birthplace in west Cork for interment at St Fachtna’s Church on Wednesday.
