Australia all-rounder Cooper Connolly delivered a crucial 64 runs from 51 balls, leading Perth Scorchers to a six-wicket triumph over Melbourne Stars in the inaugural match of the 2024-25 Big Bash League season. Tasked with chasing 147 runs for victory, the Scorchers initially struggled, finding themselves at 37-3. Nevertheless, Connolly’s innings, featuring four fours and three sixes, turned the tide for his team. He was eventually dismissed with 42 runs still required, but Ashton Turner (37 not out) and Nick Hobson (27 not out) successfully completed the chase, sealing the win with 17 balls to spare. Earlier, Melbourne Stars had posted a total of 146 for nine wickets, with Tom Curran contributing 37 runs off 19 balls and Marcus Stoinis adding 37 runs from 33 deliveries. Notts’ Joe Clarke, who is deputising for Ben Duckett for the first two fixtures, recorded a nine-ball duck. In the Scorchers’ pursuit, Curran also claimed one wicket for 25 runs. For the five-time champions, Lancashire’s Keaton Jennings and Matty Hurst each scored just four runs.
