A planning application has been submitted by developer Capital and Centric to convert a multi-storey car park in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, into residential units. The proposal outlines the construction of 114 apartments at the site of the Midway car park. The proposed development involves retaining the majority of the existing five-level structure. Modifications would include making cuts into the slabs to form a central atrium and open-air walkways. Additionally, an extension is planned for the rooftop, which would accommodate some of the new apartments. According to Capital and Centric, each residence will incorporate a recessed balcony or terrace, designed to provide “significant elements of private amenity” for future occupants. The developer also stated that these apartments would address a pressing need for housing within the town centre. Constructed in the 1960s, the Midway car park is scheduled for closure in the new year. Its closure coincides with the opening of the new 468-space Castle car park in Ryecroft, which is set to commence operations in January. This Midway development, alongside other regeneration initiatives at Ryecroft and York Place, is being advanced by Capital and Centric. This follows the borough council’s successful acquisition of £35m in government funding. A decision on the Midway application is anticipated from the authority’s planners by 22 January.
