An individual has been taken into custody on suspicion of possessing explosive materials under questionable circumstances. This arrest occurred after a security alert in County Londonderry, which has since concluded. The incident led to the evacuation of several residences close to Maghera. The man, described as being in his 50s and currently held by police, faces additional charges of suspected cannabis cultivation and possession of a Class B controlled substance. Local residents have since been permitted to return to their properties, and all affected roadways are now accessible. The security alert was initiated after a suspicious item was found on Ranaghan Road on Tuesday evening. Law enforcement officials have indicated their continued presence in the vicinity as investigations proceed. Detective Inspector Fenton stated that additional information would be released shortly. Approximately 20 dwellings were situated in proximity to the property central to the security operation. Peter and Susan Howard, whose residence is located only a short distance away, confirmed they were allowed back into their home just before 10:00 GMT on Wednesday morning. Mrs. Howard informed BBC News NI that they were caring for their grandson at home on Tuesday lunchtime when “a knock came to the door.” She recounted, “It was so out of the blue to see a policeman standing there. When he said, ‘evacuate and you have got 10 minutes’, my first thought was concern for our grandson.” “You never think something like this will happen here in the middle of nowhere,” she added. Mr. Howard commented that the police “were very nice, polite and helpful,” though he and his wife initially “just didn’t know what was going on.” Around 19:00 on Tuesday, they received notification that the alert was expected to persist through the night. They spent a period at a nearby leisure centre before being accommodated in a local hotel. Mr. Howard stated, “It was a real inconvenience but we are just glad to be home and grateful everyone is safe.” Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
