Employees of Nottingham’s tram system have decided to halt industrial action that was scheduled for the period leading up to Christmas. The potential strike arose following the suspension of a senior GMB union representative from their position. Approximately 300 staff members were prepared to engage in this industrial action next month. Nevertheless, the representative has since resumed work, and the GMB union verified on Friday that the strike had been suspended. Sarah Turner, who serves as the service delivery and safety director at Nottingham Trams Limited (NTL), stated that “a productive meeting” took place with the union, leading to the establishment of a “positive way forward.” According to the GMB, nearly 90% of the workforce had voted in favor of the strike action, which would have coincided with Nottingham’s busiest Christmas shopping week. Colin Whyatt, a GMB organiser, commented: “GMB reps work hard, day in and day out, to make sure Nottingham has a world class tram network.“We’re delighted that company bosses have seen sense and got our representative back where they belong – at work”. Ms Turner further stated: “As part of our discussions, we have agreed some key activities and next steps that will improve our working relationship with the GMB, who have notified us that the industrial action will be suspended whilst this work is under way. “These are promising next steps towards working more constructively and collaboratively, something we look forward to building on over the coming months.”
