A significant security alert at a city center bus station was resolved following the deployment of a bomb squad robot. On Friday, at 17:00 GMT, both Chester’s bus and railway stations underwent evacuation and closure as law enforcement officers investigated “suspicious activity on two buses.” Subsequently, Cheshire Police indicated that the report concerning a package on the buses seemed to have been “malicious,” and they expressed a desire to interview a female passenger who had communicated with a bus driver. The robot advanced within the established cordon in the direction of a bus. Eyewitness Josh Upton described hearing a “rather loud” bang and stated that “police told us to retreat.” Mr. Upton recounted, “I asked [the police] if a controlled explosion is taking place and they said ‘yes’.” The BBC was informed by another witness of a “very loud bang” occurring after the robot proceeded along the road to one of the buses. Cheshire Police confirmed that “there was no substance behind the claim made by a passenger that there was a package on either of the buses,” specifically one situated near the railway station and another near the bus interchange. Detective Inspector Rupert Morrey stated, “It appears to have been malicious and we are doing everything we can to find the person responsible” who “caused widespread disruption in the middle of rush hour.” He further mentioned that officers are reviewing “an abundance of CCTV” footage and wish to interview a female passenger who conversed with the bus driver. The police force announced that “all was in order” once the bomb squad had secured the area, and a precautionary cordon had subsequently been removed. National Rail reported that several train services experienced delays or cancellations throughout the operation. Merseyrail and Avanti West Coast confirmed that routes originating from London Euston were impacted, concurrently, Transport for Wales indicated that services bound for Cardiff, Crewe, Manchester, and Wolverhampton also experienced disruptions.
