A council has indicated that two bridges, previously closed because of structural issues, might become operational again in early 2025. These structures, located on Underbarrow Road and Brigsteer Road, span the A591 close to Kendal, Cumbria. Their closure occurred on 12 June following inspections that deemed them an “immediate risk.” Both bridges were constructed in the 1970s and are categorized as half-joint bridges, characterized by their central section resting on L-shaped joints. Westmorland and Furness Council stated that a reopening of the bridges to light vehicles and pedestrians in early 2025 is contingent upon positive outcomes from assessments and checks. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, “intrusive investigations” were conducted this week. These involved coring out concrete at the half-joint positions to reveal the reinforcement and determine its size, spacing, and condition. A council newsletter conveyed: “It is anticipated that, should the assessment and check both provide positive results, it may be possible to reopen the bridges to light vehicles and pedestrians some time in early 2025.” The newsletter further mentioned that consultants WSP have been evaluating alternatives such as a temporary bridge or shoring up the existing structure. However, “complexities” are associated with both these options, and implementing either propping or a temporary bridge solution would not be feasible until later in 2025. The subsequent stage of monitoring is scheduled to occur overnight on Thursday.
