A male individual has been found culpable for the sexual assault of a young girl within train lavatories. Daniel Russell, aged 38, received a conviction at Norwich Crown Court on three charges of sexually assaulting a minor under 13 years old, of compelling a child to observe a sexual act, and of creating illicit images of children. Russell, whose address is Tolhouse Street, Great Yarmouth, first drew the attention of Norfolk Police in January 2021, following his apprehension on suspicion of having indecent images. His return to Norwich Crown Court for sentencing is scheduled for 24 January 2025. A jury delivered Russell’s conviction subsequent to an eight-day trial. According to Norfolk Police, the images for which he was arrested in 2021 were not those of the victim involved in this particular case. Nevertheless, during the course of the ongoing inquiry, law enforcement personnel discovered the abuse of a young child, leading to Russell being charged with rape. Testimony presented in court detailed how, during train trips occurring between 2016 and 2021, Russell would lead the victim into the restrooms, display pornography to her, and then assault her. Detective Sergeant Mark Carrier, from Norfolk Constabulary’s Child Abuse Investigation Unit, stated: “We will always work tirelessly to support victims of sexual abuse.” He added: “The victim in this case is one of the most vulnerable in society and had to endure things a child should never have to go through.” Furthermore, he expressed: “I hope she can rebuild her life and move forward knowing she is now safe from Russell.” Detective Constable Garry Hoadley, a member of Norfolk Constabulary’s Online Team, spearheaded the inquiry into the illicit images found on Russell’s device. He commented: “This type of offending is not victimless.” He further elaborated: “Each image represents a child who has been exploited and harmed in ways that will impact them for a lifetime.” Concluding, he remarked: “This conviction serves as a reminder that the exploitation of children, in any manner, will not be tolerated in our community.” For updates on Norfolk news, access BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
