Train operator Northern has announced the introduction of a new all-stations rail service connecting Leeds and Huddersfield, forming part of several timetable adjustments across Yorkshire. This service, which began on Sunday as part of the changes, will operate every two hours, stopping at all stations, and serves as an addition to the existing express services that do not make all stops, according to Northern. The operator also stated that, following the completion of engineering work, its services between Leeds and York have reverted to their original route and will no longer be diverted via Selby. Northern advised passengers to “check their journey” as both upcoming and current engineering works could still impact routes. Furthermore, the operator cautioned train users that work related to the Transpennine Route Upgrade is scheduled to occur in the Huddersfield area from January until May 2025. Northern indicated that this program of railway improvements aims to enhance journeys for passengers travelling across the Pennines between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds, and York. During these works, services running from Leeds to Dewsbury and Huddersfield will be rerouted from Mirfield via Brighouse to Halifax, with Saturday services also extending to Bradford Interchange, it was stated. The operator added that Saturday services between Bradford Interchange and Huddersfield will cease operation, while Sunday services from Leeds to Bradford Interchange and Huddersfield will commence and terminate at Halifax. Additionally, services connecting Huddersfield and Sheffield will start and end at Lockwood. Matt Rice, Northern’s chief operating officer, commented: “The twice-yearly timetable change is an opportunity for us to adjust services so they better reflect customer demand. The Christmas period is also an opportunity for Network Rail to carry out engineering work while there are fewer people travelling on the network. For those travelling between Christmas and New Year, we ask that they check their journey as close to the day of travel as possible to see if those engineering works will affect their journey.”
