The number of individuals in Jersey experiencing financial hardship has risen compared to the previous year. The Jersey Opinions and Lifestyle Survey revealed that 35% of respondents found it difficult to cope financially, an increase from 31% in 2023. The survey collected public perspectives on subjects ranging from the cost of living to health and wellbeing. It also identified that long-term residents of Jersey exhibited less trust in the States than those who had relocated to the island within the last five years. Statistics Jersey stated that the survey gathered “detailed information on a wide range of topics” to help convey the “opinions and behaviours of islanders” and provide a “better understanding of social issues.” The report encompassed areas such as the cost of living, health, and accommodation. Over half of households (53%) living in social rental accommodation reported difficulty in meeting their housing expenses. Just under three-quarters (74%) of adults rated their health as good or very good, a figure consistent with 2022. Approximately one-third (32%) assessed their anxiety level as high, which represents an increase from 28% in 2023. Accommodation was also a prominent discussion point, with many raising concerns about escalating costs. Nearly half of rental households (48%) indicated they had experienced a rent increase in the last three years, while 32% stated they found it challenging to afford their homes – a 1% rise from the preceding year. The average trust level in the States Assembly, based on a one to 10 scale, was 4.3, making it the least trusted institution on the island. Residents who had lived on the island for more than 20 years gave an average score of 4.1, whereas those who had resided on the island for five years or fewer scored 5.4. Constable Karen Stone, chair of the Privileges and Procedures Committee, expressed that she was “naturally very disappointed to see the drop in trust in our elected parliament.” She further added: “But I feel confident that we have introduced a number of measures this year and have a lot of work under way that will provide the public with more opportunities to engage with members, which I believe will build trust over time.” For updates, follow BBC Jersey on X and Facebook.
