Residents and businesses situated on both sides of the Humber have voiced criticism regarding a review that could lead to the closure of Post Office branches. The Post Offices in Grimsby and Bransholme in Hull are two of the 115 branches currently being considered for closure. In Bransholme, shopper Sarah Swain stated she “strongly disagreed” with the plans, emphasizing that “everyone relies on it on the Bransholme estate.” The Post Office is evaluating options for its wholly-owned branches, which are currently loss-making and employ approximately 1,000 workers. These options may include alternative franchise arrangements, where a retailer such as WHSmith or another third party could take over the branches. Chairman Nigel Railton informed sub-postmasters on Wednesday that the Post Office “urgently” required “a fresh start” and a “new deal” that would place them at the “heart of this business.” Ian Brannigan, who is disabled and uses a mobility scooter to access local shops, a device he cannot take on buses, described the proposed closure of the Bransholme branch as “stupid.” He highlighted its particular importance for pensioners, who “can’t get anywhere.” Mr. Brannigan’s wife, Rose, added, “We rely on it for a lot of things – paying bills and putting money in the bank – we can’t afford to be going into town all the time.” Krystyna Clarke commented that closing the branch would be “awful,” as people in Bransholme “can’t rely on banks.” She noted that the North Hull estate has only one bank, a Halifax, and a significant proportion of Hull’s banks are located solely in the city centre. Mrs. Clarke also mentioned that individuals who depend on the Post Office to purchase gas and electricity would struggle to make those purchases anywhere else nearby. The next nearest Post Offices are in Sutton, 1.4 miles (2.3km) away, and Kingswood, 1.8 miles (2.9km) away. Andrea Tomlinson, who operates Friary Stitch, a sewing business in Grimsby town centre, stated that if the Post Office in Freshney Place were to close, “it would make my business impossible to run.” Her business banks with Barclays, which recently closed its Grimsby branch. Ms. Tomlinson further added, “They’ve pushed us towards banking completely with the Post Office. If we lose the main Post Office, we have nowhere to bank.” Post Offices in Bridlington in East Yorkshire and Stamford in Lincolnshire are also among those facing potential closure.
