Rail and road users are advised to plan ahead due to the impending closure of an East Sussex level crossing for an entire weekend at the close of November. The Portslade level crossing on Boundary Road will be inaccessible for two days to facilitate railway track replacement. This closure is scheduled to commence at 01:00 GMT on 30 November and conclude by 02:00 on 2 December. Throughout the closure period, alternative travel arrangements will be necessary. Motorists are directed to utilize the A270 Old Shoreham Road as a diversionary route. Bus services will operate in place of trains between Brighton and Littlehampton for the duration of the closure. Southern train services typically running between London Victoria and Littlehampton will be rerouted to terminate at Brighton. Services will continue to run between Littlehampton and Portsmouth Harbour/Southampton Central. Local bus services 1X, 6, and 46 will also be diverted. For pedestrians, the existing underpass will remain accessible. A shuttle bus will be provided for individuals unable to use the underpass, offering pickups and drop-offs between Portslade railway station car park, located north of the level crossing (adjacent to the cycle hub), and Portslade station (stop C) outside Station Kebab House. This shuttle service will operate for the entire duration of the crossing’s closure. Lucy McAuliffe, Network Rail’s Sussex route director, stated: “To complete the work, we need to close the railway, and as the work is taking place near the level crossing, it needs to close as well. We’re asking motorists to leave a bit more time to travel as the diversion will mean slightly longer journeys. Thank you for bearing with us while we work to improve the railway.” BBC Sussex can be followed on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
