A man who is experiencing progressive sight loss expressed being “blown away” following the complimentary renovation of his residence by a team of volunteer builders. Simon Taylor, a landscaper, had commenced redecorating his house in Thatcham, Berkshire, a home he shared with his fiancée, Debi Richens. However, in 2023, he received a registration as sight-impaired subsequent to observing a blurring of vision in his right eye. Compelled to cease operating his business and incapable of proceeding with the redecoration, the construction charity Band of Builders intervened to complete the undertaking. Subsequent to December 2022, Mr. Taylor received diagnoses of a macular hole, which was then followed by retinal detachment. Since these diagnoses, he has experienced a complete loss of sight in his right eye, and the visual acuity in his left eye has diminished to approximately 30%. Notwithstanding a robust order book and intentions to expand his landscaping enterprise, he was unable to resume work. The hall, stairs, and landing within the couple’s residence remained incomplete, characterized by walls that had been prepared and indentations filled with plaster. Ms. Richens, his partner, stated that it was “breaking his heart” that it was unsafe for him to continue with the renovation project. He reached out to Band of Builders, a charitable organization dedicated to assisting individuals within the construction sector who are facing mental or physical challenges preventing them from working. Ben Russell, the project manager, convened with the couple to discuss the necessary work for the house. Mr. Russell commented: “We’re very proud to work… but if you have to stop work for whatever reason and it’s taken away from you I think mentally that can be quite challenging.” “It’s basically to enable [former tradespeople] to have a more normalised life,” he further stated. Following an appeal for local builders and businesses prepared to contribute their time or materials, the volunteer team commenced the work. “It was extraordinary, there was joy and banter and amazing camaraderie,” Ms. Richens remarked. The renovation, encompassing the completion of decoration and the installation of new doors on the upper floor, required four days, involved five builders, and incurred a cost of £2,600. Mr. Taylor was overwhelmed by the act of kindness, Ms. Richens also mentioned. “He was just blown away by the sheer kindness and thoughtfulness and passion.” Readers can follow BBC Berkshire on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), or Instagram.
