Residents in west Devon are being provided with the opportunity to utilize thermal imaging cameras to identify methods for enhancing their homes’ energy efficiency. According to West Devon Borough Council, this thermal imaging initiative aligns with the council’s objective of promoting more environmentally sustainable housing. The council further stated that the project is intended to assist individuals amidst the “ongoing cost-of-living crisis.” The council indicated that eight communities have been extended an invitation to employ these cameras in both residential properties and communal structures during the colder winter period. “The information provided by the cameras will inform what retrofit work could be done to make the properties more energy efficient,” the council affirmed. Councillor Chris West stated that assisting residents with the cost-of-living-crisis and addressing climate change constitute the authority’s “long-term goals.” He elaborated: “The project will empower our residents to learn more about their homes, and what retrofit work could be done to make them more energy efficient.” He added: “Retrofit work is a speciality of our partners in this project, Tamar Energy Community, so we’re delighted to be working with them to make the most of their expertise.” Kate Royston, director and energy advisor for Tamar Energy Community, expressed anticipation for assisting communities throughout west Devon in comprehending measures to render homes “cosy, efficient and future-ready.” The council also mentioned its intention to back an “energy champion” within participating communities, who will oversee the deployment of a thermal imaging camera in their respective town, village, or locality. Tamar Energy Community stated that it would offer an initial presentation on retrofitting to each community that registers, emphasizing key considerations and directing them to available advice and support. Furthermore, it indicated that a subsequent event would be held in the community for discussing and sharing outcomes, as well as offering guidance. The council concluded by stating that applications would be processed on a first-come, first-served basis, and additional details are accessible through its website.
