Andy Davis, 33, from Stone, Staffordshire, has returned to the UK after sustaining severe injuries while working in Thailand. A public appeal successfully raised nearly £20,000 to cover the costs of a medical repatriation flight. Mr. Davis suffered the amputation of his left leg and was hospitalized with a shattered pelvis and a torn bladder following a car crash last month on an island near Krabi. His friend, Mike Pugh, initiated a GoFundMe campaign to gather funds for Mr. Davis’s return to the UK. Currently, Mr. Davis is receiving care at the Royal Stoke University Hospital and has expressed being “very happy to be home.” However, he is still battling an infection and awaits additional surgical procedures on his pelvis and bladder. Close to 500 individuals contributed to the fundraiser, which enabled Mr. Davis to fly back to his home country sooner than anticipated. Mr. Pugh stated that the donations covered a portion of the £28,000 medical repatriation expenses, with Mr. Davis’s family providing the remaining sum. According to Mr. Pugh, his friend’s swift return to the UK “essentially has saved his life as he could have started to deteriorate if he was still out in Thailand.” Mr. Davis began teaching English as a foreign language in 2016, having traveled to various countries including Thailand, Peru, Mexico, and Ecuador. More recently, he had been involved in establishing teaching opportunities for other British citizens interested in traveling abroad to teach English. Mr. Pugh, who visited Mr. Davis at Royal Stoke on Saturday, reported that the 33-year-old is “significantly better” and feels “much more positive” since his repatriation. Although Mr. Davis is still contending with an infection that is delaying further treatment, he has commenced physiotherapy. Mr. Pugh shared: “He was over the moon, because he had been able to sit up in bed and turn to put his other foot on the ground.” Mr. Pugh also indicated that his friend is expected to remain hospitalized through Christmas as he awaits further surgical interventions.
