Rail authorities have criticized the “blatant disregard for safety” exhibited by individuals who illegally access a foot crossing in East Sussex. Multiple instances of individuals walking on the railway tracks or engaging in activities on the foot crossing in Mill Lane, Rye, have been brought to the attention of British Transport Police during the current year. Surveillance camera footage captures a specific event where one individual stood on the crossing to photograph another person who was posing on the tracks. James Neeson, who manages level crossings for Network Rail, cautioned the public that any person trespassing on the railway faces the danger of fatal injury. He stated, “Incidents of trespass on the railway cause issues for everyone using the network, where an individual could sustain life-changing injuries and in the worst-case scenario, loss of life.” Mr Neeson added, “A photo for social media is never worth the risk of putting yourself in this extremely dangerous situation.” He further urged, “We sincerely urge people to stay off the tracks and ensure they understand the risks of trespassing.” The crossing located in Rye is situated on a section of track that sees up to 40 trains daily, operating at speeds of approximately 60mph (95km/h). Beyond the peril of being hit by a train, the electrified “third rail,” which supplies power to trains on different sections of the network, introduces additional hazards for anyone participating in such actions, according to a Network Rail spokesperson. They stated that the combination of rapidly moving trains, slick conditions alongside the tracks, and unstable terrain poses a significant threat of severe, life-altering injuries or fatalities. Chief Inspector Adam Swallow of British Transport Police commented, “Where we know trespass is a concern, we will increase our patrols, looking proactively for those breaking the law.”
