An initiative has commenced to raise £500,000 for the modernization of a community playground, described as a “lifeline.” The Venture Community Hub, situated in White City, Gloucester, has served as a secure environment for children and families to engage in play, social interaction, and learning for 41 years. Although community members constructed the play area in 1996, the team indicates it has reached a critical state where repairs are no longer sufficient. Dawn Barnes, who utilized the facility during her childhood, now holds the position of CEO for the charity. She stated: “It was the place where I went and found people that would listen and support me.” The proposed designs for the new playground, developed by the White City community surrounding the hub, incorporate features such as multi-use games areas, sensory zones, accessible play equipment, and a zipline. In addition to the playground, the hub offers children opportunities to participate in arts and crafts, sports, games, performing arts, and cooking activities. Ms. Barnes characterized The Venture as being akin to a family. The 47-year-old has dedicated a significant portion of her life to the hub, having experienced a “difficult” childhood. Her involvement began at the age of eight, progressing to a volunteer role at 14. Two years later, she secured her first job, and has remained employed there since. Ms. Barnes stated: “The playground was my lifeline,” adding, “They took me to university interviews and they listened and supported me even with things like clothes and shoes. “They looked after and nurtured me… and I know that we do that for so many other children.” She further noted that the hub has served multiple generations of families, with individuals she knew from her youth now bringing their own children and grandchildren to the facility.
