Strong winds from Storm Bert are causing disruption throughout Surrey, leading to power outages and prompting organizers of Christmas events to alter their plans due to weather concerns. UK Power Networks reported on Saturday that its engineers were looking into power disruptions in the Godalming vicinity. A yellow wind warning, effective from 09:00 GMT on Saturday, covered south-east England. The Met Office indicated that the strong winds associated with Storm Bert were expected to create hazardous conditions and cause disturbances. A spokesperson for UK Power Networks stated: “During a storm, fallen trees and broken branches can damage overhead power lines.” They further advised: “If you see damaged overhead lines or equipment stay well away, call 105 and 999, and keep others away.” Painshill Gardens in Cobham announced its closure for both Saturday and Sunday, anticipating high winds. Organizers confirmed that Christmas festivities in Oxted have been reduced in scope. The organizers commented: “Our procession, switch-on, market and outdoor rides may be cancelled due to Storm Bert but there are still plenty of reasons to come into Oxted.” Cranleigh’s seasonal parade was called off, though Father Christmas is still expected to attend. The organizers added: “Local residents and the many visitors to Cranleigh will still be entertained by our hardy local musicians, as they will be performing on a purpose-built stage in Fountain Square.” A Festive Family Fun Day scheduled for Sunday in Guildford was still planned to proceed. Guildford councillor Catherine Houston noted that efforts were made to relocate as many activities as feasible indoors. She further remarked: “It is all happening. Luckily we have got some indoor places people can go and hopefully the rain will stop for a little bit and people can get out and about.” The weather alert remains active throughout the county until 21:00 on Sunday.
