Wayne Rooney, who was appointed as Plymouth Argyle head coach in May, has expressed his gratitude for the welcome he received during his recent return to his former club, Derby County. The current Plymouth Argyle head coach guided his team to a 1-1 draw at Pride Park. This marked his initial visit back to the club where he began his managerial career, more than two years after his departure. During Rooney’s tenure, the Rams navigated significant financial difficulties, which resulted in the club entering administration and a deduction of 21 points during the 2021-22 season, ultimately leading to their relegation to League One. Following the match, he informed BBC Radio Devon, “It was strange going into the away dugout.” He added, “I’m very thankful to the fans for giving me a good reception getting off the bus and at the end of the game.” Rooney further reflected, “I’ve had some great memories here at the football club during a very difficult period in the club’s history.” He continued, “I’m sure the fans knew that in the time I was here as manager I did everything I could to try and keep the club sustained.” Concluding his remarks, he stated, “I know there’s a mutual respect between myself and the fans and I wish the club all the best moving forward.”
