A £1 million initiative will see two roads in a coastal community undergo resurfacing, marking their first such upgrade in nearly a hundred years. The reconstruction efforts for York Road and Broadway, situated in Sutton on Sea, Lincolnshire, are scheduled to commence on January 6, 2025, with an expected duration of up to four months. Councillor Colin Matthews, who represents Alford and Sutton, stated that he has dedicated “over the past six years” to bringing about these improvements and expressed his satisfaction “to see them finally coming to fruition.” He further noted: “Both roads were last surfaced in the 1930s using concrete slabs from Brickyard Lane Cement Works in Sutton on Sea.” Matthews indicated that despite the roads’ longevity over several decades, the vibrations generated by vehicular traffic had become a significant nuisance for local residents. Nevertheless, he affirmed that the upcoming all-tarmac surface would eradicate these vibrations, “ensuring both roads last for decades more.” Additionally, the pedestrian walkway on Broadway is slated for widening to provide increased room for those on foot. Councillor Richard Davies, the executive member for highways, characterized the undertaking as “no small feat,” explaining that it will require over 3,500 tonnes of material to “reconstruct both roads from their foundations up.” He specified that this constitutes the third and concluding stage of the coastal carriageway improvement scheme, a project that previously encompassed enhancements to Old Roman Bank, connecting Sandilands and Chapel St Leonards, and the A1104, extending from Maltby le Marsh to Mablethorpe. Davies further mentioned that due to the concrete composition of the existing road, residents in the vicinity should anticipate disturbances during its demolition and removal, and he extended his gratitude for their patience beforehand. The project is planned for execution in two distinct phases; the initial phase will involve staggered road closures between Broadway and York Road, continuing until mid-March. The subsequent phase will focus on work along York Road, scheduled to occur from mid-March to mid-April. Additionally, two alternative routes will be established: one through Station Road/High Street/York Road (and the reverse) for when Broadway is inaccessible, and another utilizing High Street/Station Road/Church Lane/Furlongs Road (and the reverse) for when York Road is closed.
