Expressions of remembrance have been offered for a teacher discovered with fatal stab wounds in south London on Thursday morning. Although formal identification is still pending, the Metropolitan Police identified her as Gemma Devonish. Miss Devonish held the position of head of year at Rosebery School in Epsom, Surrey. The school conveyed that it was “devastated by the sudden and unexpected death.” In a statement, the school communicated: “Our thoughts are with Gemma’s mother and sister, extended family and friends, at this deeply distressing time.” A 38-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of murder during the early hours of Friday. Police officers and the London Ambulance Service were dispatched to an address in Nutfield Close, Carshalton, at approximately 10:30 GMT, where they located an injured woman. She was pronounced deceased at the scene. The arrested man was known to Gemma, and detectives have stated they are not seeking any other individuals in connection with her death. Investigators have appealed to anyone who was in the Nutfield Close area and may have witnessed or heard anything suspicious, particularly on Wednesday or Thursday morning, to contact them. Chief Superintendent Andy Brittain, who leads policing in Sutton, remarked: “A team of specialist detectives is already making significant progress in this investigation and have swiftly arrested a man who is now in police custody.” Local residents will observe an increased number of officers in and around Nutfield Close while important investigative work is carried out. He further added: “I want to thank residents for their patience while this continues and would urge anyone with concerns to speak to one of them so they can assist.” Miss Devonish’s family has been notified and is receiving support from specialist officers, police confirmed.
