The public is being requested to wear face masks in hospital emergency departments due to an increase in flu cases. Earlier this month, the Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust directed staff at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital to utilize masks in “all patient-facing areas.” This directive has since been expanded to include personnel at Scunthorpe General Hospital, Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby, and Goole Hospital, specifically within emergency departments and wards attending to patients with influenza or respiratory conditions. The trust also indicated that visitors to these units would similarly be requested to wear masks. Individuals were additionally advised against visiting patients if they exhibited symptoms of influenza or any other illness. Chief Nurse Amanda Stanford reported that the trust’s hospitals have admitted a growing number of patients with flu over the last three weeks. She stated, “We’d like to assure the public that these measures are being kept under daily review by our senior nursing and infection control teams and we will keep you informed of any changes over the coming days and months.” She further added, “Thank you for your cooperation and understanding while we do our best to protect your loved ones, relatives and friends who are in our care.” Last week, masks were also reinstated in certain sections of Lincolnshire hospitals.
