The Wanted’s Max George to Undergo Urgent Heart Surgery

Max George, a member of the boy band The Wanted, has announced that he requires surgery for a heart condition sooner than initially anticipated by medical professionals. The 36-year-old singer was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, underwent a scan on Monday, and subsequently shared an update stating, “We don’t have too much time to wait.” George revealed his diagnosis of “a 2:1 block in my heart,” a condition characterized by a slower or irregular heart rhythm due to issues with electrical impulses. He described the current period as “a pretty scary time right now and the last few nights have been really rough,” but expressed optimism about being discharged from the hospital before Christmas. George’s announcement was accompanied by several photographs and a video depicting him on a hospital trolley, with medical wires connected to his chest, while he gave a thumbs-up gesture. In his post, he wrote: “Had a little day trip today,” adding, “full Cat scan on my heart – not something I’d choose to do again.” He continued, “As I mentioned yesterday, I have a 2:1 block in my heart. “Unfortunately, my heart rate hasn’t picked up at all in almost a week. “Because of this, we don’t have too much time to wait.”So it looks like I’m going to be in surgery way quicker than the doctors first thought. “I may even be home for Christmas.”Still a pretty scary time right now and the last few nights have been really rough.”But I wanted to say that I’m absolutely humbled by all your messages of support – both people I know and those I don’t.”It’s given me a much-needed boost and my family have been overwhelmed with support, which means more to me than anything. Much love, Max.” In a distinct video shared on Sunday, George informed his followers that the scan would ascertain if he required “a pacemaker, a defibrillator or something else.” He explained, “It’s the top part not sending signals to the bottom, apparently.” George also mentioned in the Sunday video that he was “feeling OK tonight,” humorously adding, “The City game didn’t help much,” referring to Manchester City’s significant late loss to their rivals, Manchester United. The British Heart Foundation defines an atrioventricular heart block as a condition where electrical impulses are either delayed or obstructed in their path between the atria (the heart’s upper chambers) and the ventricles (the heart’s lower chambers). Heart blocks are categorized into first, second, or third degrees, based on their level of severity. George gained prominence in the early 2010s alongside his bandmates Siva Kaneswaran, Nathan Sykes, Jay McGuiness, and Tom Parker. The group, The Wanted, declared a hiatus in 2014, and in 2022, George and Kaneswaran resumed performing as a duo. George also participated in Strictly Come Dancing in 2020.
