An individual has received a prison sentence of nearly two years for fracturing a friend’s skull with a solitary “unprovoked” punch. David Moore, aged 33, assaulted the victim outside a bar situated in Amble, Northumberland, resulting in the man falling and hitting his head on the road surface, according to proceedings at Newcastle Crown Court. Subsequently, he moved the victim onto the pavement and entered the pub to seek assistance for the injured individual, as presented in court. Moore, who is a father of five children, pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm and received a sentence of 21 months in prison. Prosecutor Matthew Hopkins stated that the victim was passing Angie’s Tavern on Queen Street around 23:30 BST on 12 October 2023. Mr Hopkins further explained that Moore came out of the establishment, made a gesture towards the man, and then struck him, causing the victim to fall to the ground. The court was informed that Moore then moved the man off the road, rushed back into the pub to alert others, and subsequently proceeded to the victim’s residence to obtain additional assistance. It was revealed in court that the victim sustained a brain bleed and three skull fractures. During mitigation, Shaun Routledge mentioned that Moore, residing at Straffen Court in Amble, and the victim maintained their friendship following the incident, and that they had been “local men out having a drink” on the night in question. He characterized the assault as “impulsive and spontaneous” and stated that Moore expressed genuine remorse. Judge Advocate Edward Legard commented that the CCTV recording of the assault constituted “chilling viewing”. He further remarked that it was “absolutely and abundantly clear” the victim posed “no threat at all” to Moore, yet Moore struck him, rendering him instantly unconscious. The judge described the injuries as “very serious” and “grave,” but noted it was “extreme good fortune” that they had not resulted in more devastating consequences. “It was an attack of unprovoked violence against a wholly defenceless man,” the judge said.
